PNM Funds Crime Stoppers Reward for Tips Leading to the Arrest and Conviction of Copper Thieves

Albuquerque: PNM, today, announced it is providing funding to support a Crime Stoppers reward of up to $500 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of thieves who steal copper wiring from utility poles, street lights, businesses, churches and PNM electric facilities.

"Copper theft puts lives at risk on an almost daily basis and costs our customers millions of dollars each year. We are asking anyone who knows about a copper theft to call Crime Stoppers and report that information safely and confidentially," said Pat Vincent, PNM CEO and President.

PNM is donating $20,000 to Crime Stoppers and is joining forces with the City of Albuquerque and Crime Stoppers to fight copper theft.

While police report that thieves may only get $80 from the metal recyclers who purchase stolen copper wire, the experience of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, one of many victims of copper theft this year in Albuquerque, illustrates the true economic impact of the crime.

"Our church was robbed three times of copper wire and many other businesses, schools and churches have been robbed multiple times. It's time for our city and legislature to crack down on this kind of theft and the terrible damage it does," said Frank Yates, pastor of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

"Copper theft has grown into a major crime in this and nearly every other community in the country. As mayor, I ask for your help,' said Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry. "Citizens are the front line in stopping crime."

"Crime Stoppers exists to make our community safer by partnering with law enforcement and media. We are thrilled to now be partnering with PNM to help rid the community of this costly crime," said Connie Lee, president of Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit organization that has been helping to solve crimes since 1976.

"I want people to remember that this crime isn't just about money; it's also about the threat to public safety. Your tip to Crime Stoppers could save a life," said Pat Vincent-Collawn.

With headquarters in Albuquerque, PNM is the largest electricity provider in New Mexico, serving 500,000 customers in dozens of communities across the state. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company also headquartered in Albuquerque. For more information, visit PNM.com.
