Halloween Decorating Safety Tips from PNM

Here are a few safety tips to help you avoid any shocking surprises:
Outdoor Decorating Dos and Don'ts- Stay clear of power lines: Always keep decorations and yourself at least 10 feet away from overhead lines. That ghost in your tree isn't worth the risk.
- Ladder safety is key: Never carry an extended ladder upright. Transport it horizontally to avoid accidental contact with power lines.
- Respect utility equipment: Never attach decorations to utility poles or place cords in trees near power lines. It's dangerous and can disrupt service.
- Choose UL-approved lights: The Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label to ensures your lights meet safety standards.
- Use outdoor-rated gear: Only use extension cords and decorations labeled for outdoor use when decorating outside.
- Plug into protection: Use outlets with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Keep cords out of walkways: Prevent trips and tangles by securing cords away from high-traffic areas.
- Pet-proof your setup: Curious critters and dangling wires don't mixkeep cords out of reach of pets.
- Unplug before bed: Always turn off and unplug decorations before heading to sleep or leaving the house.

Looking ahead to the colder months, PNM's Heating Season Shut-Off Protection ensures that eligible customers won't lose electricity during the winter. If you're approved for LIHEAP, you may qualify for this moratorium, which runs from November 15 to March 15. To benefit, customers must arrange a payment plan before the moratorium begins and continue making payments throughout the season. This protection offers peace of mind during the most critical time of yearjust be sure to stay current to avoid service interruptions after March 15.
