What is it?

Time of Day is an opt-in rate with a pricing plan in which electricity rates vary according to the time of day, season, and day type (weekday or weekend/holiday). Electricity prices are higher during on-peak hours and lower during off-peak or super off-peak hours. With time-of-use, you have more control over your energy bills and when you shift your energy use away from on-peak times, you can save substantially because the rates are lower. Shifting your energy use can be simple and easy because the times that prices go up or down are the same every weekday.

Important terminology to know

Term Definition
Time-of-Day (TOD) An electric rate plan where the price per kWh depends on the time of day.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh) A measure of electricity defined as a unit of energy in one hour. Electricity prices are shown in cents per kWh.
On-Peak A specific time of day when electricity demand is at its highest, highest prices.
Off-Peak A specific time when electricity demand is lower, lower prices.
Super-Off Peak A specific time when electricity demand is at its lowest, lowest prices.

What are the peak period hours?

That is up to you. The more you shift the more you can save.

Every business is different, and your savings will be determined by how much electricity you can shift away from on-peak hours.

For instance, you can also use a programmable thermostat to help manage your business's energy usage.

Bill Guarantee

Bill Guarantee

Residential (1A) and Small Power (2A) customers only will qualify for the bill guarantee during the program. The bill guarantee will only be available one time per customer under the following conditions. The bill guarantee will be calculated once at the end of a customer's first twelve consecutive months on the program rate at the same premise. After the twelve months, PNM will calculate what the customer would have paid under their original rate and what they paid under the Time-Of-Day rate. If the customer paid more under the Time-Of-Day rate, then PNM will credit the difference on the customer's bill.

If a customer quits taking service on the Time-of-Day rate before the consecutive twelve months have ended, they are no longer eligible for the bill guarantee.

What can I do to shift energy use away from on-peak hours?

Below are simple things you can do to reduce your energy usage.

Raise the thermostat a few degrees during the cooling season and lower it during the heating season.

Adjust the thermostats during times the business is closed.

Install programmable thermostats and save by adjusting temperature settings based on your hours of operation.

Change filters regularly.

Turn off computers, monitors, copiers, and printers at the end of the day.

Unplug chargers, computer speakers, coffee makers, etc. when not in use. They will continue to draw energy even when they are not in use.

Turning off all but essential lighting.

Turn off electronic light displays or signs when your business is closed.

Does my business qualify?

You can sign up for the Time-of-Day rate. You must be willing to shift some energy-consuming activities to off-peak times to see savings.

This rate will have a maximum capacity of 2,500 spots for non-residential customers.
