Summer Cooling Tips & Programs
When the sun is blazing, your cooling system becomes the MVP of your home. Help it run efficiently with these simple steps inspired by PNM's seasonal tips:
- Give your AC some breathing room. Make sure vents aren't blocked by furniture or rugs so cool air can circulate freely.
- Change your air filters regularly. A clean filter helps your system run more efficiently and keeps your indoor air fresher.
- Use ceiling fans wisely. Fans don't cool the air, but they do cool you. Set them to spin counter-clockwise in summer to create a refreshing breeze.
- Keep the sun out. Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day to reduce heat gain. Even better, use light-colored window coverings to reflect heat.
- Grill out instead of heating up the kitchen. Ovens add extra warmth indoors. Summer is the per- fect excuse to take dinner outside.
Everyday Energy Efficiency Tips
Energy efficiency isn't just for big projects. It's built on small, consistent choices that add up over time.
- Switch to LED bulbs. They use less energy and produce less heat, which is a win-win in summer.
- Seal up drafts. It may sound like a winter task, but sealing gaps around doors and windows keeps cool air inside where it belongs. In-store discounts are available on weatherstripping, door sweeps, and spray foam insulation. Visit PNM.com/instantdiscounts for a list of participating locations.
- Unplug unused electronics. Chargers, game consoles, and small appliances draw power even when they're off.
- Wash clothes in cold water. Your washer uses energy to heat water, so skipping the hot cycle saves money without sacrificing clean laundry.
- Run appliances during cooler hours. Dishwashers and dryers add heat to your home. Using them in the evening helps your AC work less.
Ways to Save on Your Electric Bill During Peak Heat
When temperatures soar, so can energy use. Here are some of the most effective ways to keep your bill manageable:
- Set your thermostat wisely. Every degree matters. Setting it a bit higher when you're away can lead to noticeable savings.
- Use a programmable or smart thermostat. Automating your cooling schedule helps avoid unnec-essary energy use.
- Take advantage of off-peak hours. If you are a Time-of-Day or Whole-Home EV program participant, shifting energy heavy tasks-like laundry or running the dishwasher-to cooler times of day can help reduce your bill. Learn more about these rate options at PNM.com/timeofday and PNM.com/whev
- Get your AC tuned up. A well-maintained system runs more efficiently and can help prevent mid-summer breakdowns.

Working Together to Prepare for Summer
We're working year-round to help keep the lights on and our communities safe through proactive vegetation management. Trees and vegetation growing too close to power lines are a leading cause of outages, especially during hot, dry, and windy conditions, so staying ahead of that risk is a top priority for our teams.
In 2025, our crews pruned more than 80,000 trees and cleared vegetation along more than 780 miles of power lines across our system. This work helps reduce outages, lowers wildfire risk, and strengthens electric reliability during the times customers need it most. We continue to focus on areas most vulnerable to extreme heat and storms, prioritizing locations with higher wildfire risk.
Vegetation management doesn't stop when summer begins. We'll continue inspecting and maintaining lines throughout the sea-son and beyond as part of our long-term commitment to safety and reliability.
As our crews perform vegetation management only on public property and within utility easements, customers play an important role as well. You can help by regularly checking your yard, safely pruning trees and vegetation around your home (note: before prun-ing, contact PNM to request an inspection if the trees and or vegetation are near overhead lines), and clearing debris and gutters. These simple steps make a meaningful difference in reducing wildfire risk and keeping power flowing safely this summer.
