New Mexico Nonprofits Receive Cash From PNM Fund To Save Energy

Albuquerque: Nonprofits throughout New Mexico will be able to put more money into their mission-based programs after receiving a Reduce Your Use Grant from the PNM Fund, a division of the PNM Resources Foundation.

The 2013 Reduce Your Use Grants awarded $250,000 to help nonprofits complete projects that reduce their energy use and lower their utility bills.

"This year's grants will support a variety of energy efficiency projects for many grassroots and civic organizations," said Diane Harrison Ogawa, executive director of the PNM Resources Foundation. "We are excited to see the completion of energy saving projects across the state from Las Vegas to Deming and many communities in between."

Awarded projects include upgrading to energy efficiency lighting, purchasing energy saving appliances, installing solar shades and replacing single-paned windows.

Nonprofits collected more than $1.56 million through the Reduce Your Use grant program since its start in 2008.

"The Reduce Your Use grant coupled with the PNM Quick Saver Program allowed us to replace motors in a walk-in refrigerator/freezer. This upgrade will allow us to save 7,000 kilowatt-hours each year," said Peter Rinn, executive director of Project Share. "Without this support from PNM and the PNM Resources Foundation, we would have had to divert scarce dollars to utilities instead of providing dinner for 127 people per evening."

Since 1983, the Foundation, which is funded by PNM shareholders, has invested more than $12 million into helping to build strong, productive communities in New Mexico.

With headquarters in Albuquerque, PNM is the largest electricity provider in New Mexico, serving 500,000 customers in dozens of communities across the state. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company also headquartered in Albuquerque. For more information, visit PNM.com.

In 1983, PNM shareholders created the PNM Foundation as a separate, nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation governed by a board of trustees comprised of PNM employees. In 2005, with the acquisition of First Choice Power and Texas-New Mexico Power Co., the foundation expanded its' scope to include parts of Texas. No customer funds are part of the PNM Resources Foundation endowment. For more information, visit PNM.com..
