Wildfire Safety and Preparedness

Wildfire Safety and Preparedness

Lower precipitation levels may lead to increased wildfire risks this season. PNM crews work year-round to reduce wildfire risktrimming vegetation near power lines, inspecting poles and equipment, and replacing what's needed to keep our system safe.

If the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning in high-risk areas, our system automatically shuts off power when something contacts the lineslike tree limbs or debris. This helps prevent wildfires but can lead to longer outages, since crews must inspect lines before safely restoring power.

In extreme conditions, we may proactively turn off power in high-risk areas to prevent wildfiresa Public Safety Power Shutoff. Here are a few ways you can prepare:

  • Receive important notifications during power outages by updating your contact information and signing-up for outage alerts. View and update your contact information at PNM.com/login or give us a call at 888-DIAL-PNM. Sign up for outage alerts by texting #REG to 78766 and then #ALERT to 78766 from a phone number associated with your account.

  • Build or restock your Emergency Preparedness Kit, including food, water, a flashlight, batteries, back up phone charger, cash and first aid supplies.

  • LifeWatch is a free service from PNM that helps families like yours stay informed during power outages. If someone in your home relies on medical equipment that requires power, enroll in LifeWatch service to receive notifications. Go to PNM.com/LifeWatch.
