EV Charging Basics

Understanding EV Charging Levels and Equipment

Charging your EV is simpler than it sounds. There are three main levels ¿ Level 1, Level 2, and DC Fast Charging ¿ each offering a different speed, cost, and setup. Below, we break down what each level means so you can choose the option that fits your daily driving habits.

AC Level 1 Charger

Provides about 3¿5 miles of range per hour of charging using a standard 120V household outlet. Level 1 charging can support light or occasional charging needs but typically requires long charging times.

Voltage: 120V 1-Phase AC
Amps:  12-16 Amps
Charging Loads:  1.4 to 1.9 kW
Charge Time For Vehicle:  3-5 miles of range per hour

AC Level 2 Charger

Delivers about 10¿20 miles of range per hour using a 240-volt residential outlet or hard-wired. A Level 2 charger powers your EV 3 to 5 times faster than a standard Level 1 outlet. You'll also find Level 2 chargers in public spaces like shopping centers, apartment communities, and workplaces.

Voltage: 208V or 240V 1-Phase AC
Amps:  12-80 Amps (Typ. 32 Amps)
Charging Loads:  2.5 to 19.2 kW (Typ. 7 kW)
Charge Time For Vehicle:  10-20 miles of range per hour

DC Level 3 Fast Charger

DC Level 3 Fast Chargers (DCFC) are designed for quick stops when time matters, similar to a gas station experience. They can add approximately 20¿70 miles of range in 20¿30 minutes, making them well suited for longer trips or occasional emergency top-ups rather than daily charging.

Installing one requires a three-phase electrical setup, and your EV must be equipped for DC fast-charging capability. These high-powered stations are typically found in high-traffic public areas suited for quick charging.

Voltage: 208V or 480V 3-Phase AC
Amps:  <125 Amps (Typ. 60 Amps)
Charging Loads:  <90 kW (Typ. 50 kW)
Charge Time For Vehicle:  80% Charge in 20 - 30 Minutes
