    What You Can Do

When planting new trees, be careful not to site them near power lines. The best long term approach to prevent future power line problems is to remove tall growing trees and re-plant with low growing varieties.

See the below diagram for guidance on how far away you should plant tall and medium growth trees from power lines.

    • Know where underground lines are located before planting a tree, shrub or garden plant.
    • Prune trees on your property to prevent tree limbs from growing into power lines.
      • If a tree is growing into power lines, do not allow children or anyone to climb the tree.
    • If you want to remove a tree that is close to a power line, check your local listings to locate a contractor qualified to trim vegetation around power lines. Before work begins, be sure to verify that the contractor is licensed and insured, and complies with all applicable laws, codes, ordinances and/or permits.

If you have power quality issues, please call 888-DIAL-PNM / (888) 342-5766 to report the situation.
