PNM Energizes New Switching Station
The new station will enable quicker outage restoration, more flexibility during maintenance.
Albuquerque - PNM energized a new switching station in Albuquerque, located near Menaul and Carlisle. The new Switching Station will allow flexibility when crews need to work on equipment in the area, minimizing the amount of equipment taken off line for maintenance. During power outages, PNM will have the ability to reroute electricity to get customers back up and running a little quicker.
PNM determined that the system serving this area had reached the limits of its capacity during peak summer demand periods. The new station will redistribute power from the most heavily loaded transmission lines to less utilized lines, mitigating the existing transmission limitations, and improving voltage in the area.
"The new switching station features technology that allows system operators to remotely control equipment and troubleshoot," said Alicia Ortega, Director, Projects and Program Management for PNM. "This is more efficient, reducing the amount of times we have to send crews out to the station to perform these types of tasks." The equipment can also send alarms to transmission operators to let them know which line or piece of equipment is having issues.
"PNM is consistently looking for new ways to improve our system and to use technology to help us better serve our customers," Ortega added. "As part of that process, we're looking into the possibility of adding an asset monitoring program, which can monitor the health of substation equipment, and will alert PNM when a unit requires maintenance."
There is a great deal of planning and time that go into constructing a new station, and PNM works with each community, especially established neighborhoods, to accommodate what the neighborhood and city require for that particular area. From start to finish, the process could take a couple of years before a new station is energized and servicing customers.
With headquarters in Albuquerque, PNM is the largest electricity provider in New Mexico, serving more than 500,000 customers in dozens of communities across the state. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company also headquartered in Albuquerque. For more information, visit PNM.com.
