PNM, Nissan and Local Businesses Launch Free EV Fast Charging Stations April 15

Albuquerque:  PNM will announce the launch of five free electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations with a brief kick-off event at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 15 at the Winrock Mall near Dave and Buster's, 2100 Louisiana Blvd. NE in Albuquerque.

The chargers are compatible with all-electric vehicles such as a Nissan LEAF®  or the BMW i3 that are equipped with DC (direct current) fast charge capability.  Fast chargers can charge a battery up to 60 or 80 miles of range in 20 minutes.  Use your mobile phone to activate the charger by downloading the app.

"This EV initiative is another way we are driving innovation for a clean energy future and supporting the development of new business segments in our community," said Ron Darnell, PNM senior vice president of public policy.

The chargers are funded by Nissan and free to use. The company states that since the launch of the Nissan LEAF, the world's best-selling EV, Nissan has reinforced its commitment to zero emission mobility with investments in charging infrastructure to serve the needs of LEAF drivers in markets across the U.S.  Nissan is working proactively with charging companies, local businesses and community partners to install hundreds of fast chargers across the U.S., including these new stations in the Albuquerque area.

EVs are better for the environment, reduce reliance on foreign oil and may cost less over time to operate and maintain. Two Department of Energy websites let you compare cost and emissions: and
