SmartMeters:

The Next Step in a Smarter, More Resilient Grid

When installed, your new SmartMeter will power your home and business with more reliable, affordable, and clean energy. Delivering a more accurate service, more predictable billing, and greater confidence in the energy you depend on every day.

What Is a SmartMeter?

A SmartMeter is a digital electric meter that records energy use in near-real time and securely sends that information to us periodically throughout the day through a secure network. It replaces traditional meters that require manual readings. This improves accuracy, speeds up response times, and helps us keep the lights on for you.

How It Works

SmartMeters are part of a secure two-way system called Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI). They communicate with nearby network devicesthose small units installed on polesto relay energy data back to us.

Each meter sends encrypted information using radio signals thousands of times weaker than a cell phone. That data helps us monitor the grid in real time, detect outages quickly, and ensure that energy delivery remains stable and predictable.

Benefits You'll Notice

Benefits You'll Notice

Accurate Billing

SmartMeters record actual energy use daily, eliminating estimated readings and improving billing accuracy.

Fewer Outages and Faster Response When They Happen

If your power goes out, your SmartMeter can automatically alert us, so crews can respond faster and restore service more efficiently.

More Transparency

SmartMeters lay the groundwork for future tools that can give you a clearer view of their energy use and monthly bill predictability.

A Stronger, Smarter Grid

Every SmartMeter adds real-time visibility to the grid, helping us deliver cleaner, more stable, and more affordable power to ou, your neighbors and all of our customers.

Safety & Privacy

Secure and Compliant

SmartMeters meet strict federal safety and cybersecurity standards. They use very low-energy radio signalsfar weaker than your home WiFi and cell phoneand transmit encrypted data only about total energy use, never personal information.

We cannot see what appliances you use or when you use them. The data simply shows how much electricity flows through your meter.

What to Expect and When

SmartMeter installations will begin in 2026
and finish in late 2028.

Here's what you need to know:

  • We will notify you at least three months before your installation.
  • You don't need to schedule anything and in the vast majority of cases you don't need to be home.
  • The meter installation process takes about 10-15 minutes.
  • You'll receive a notice once your new meter is activated.
  • There's no upfront cost for SmartMeter installation or equipment. The rider on your bill helps support SmartMeters and other improvements to the electrical grid that benefit all customers.

What's Coming Next

As Grid Modernization continues, we will introduce new tools that help you better understand your energy use and provide greater predictability to your monthly bill. These future digital tools are made possible by SmartMeter technology and we will let you know when they are available.
