Power Plants
New Mexico has the nation's fourth-largest coal reserve and
is the second-largest producer of natural gas. Energy produced
in New Mexico is used by New Mexicans as well as residents
throughout the Southwest.
PNM owns all or part of eight power plants, seven of which
are in New Mexico. Strategic investment in these plants has
given PNM a diverse fuel mix, which provides PNM customers
reliability and rate stability. PNM's power plants are fueled
by coal (41 percent of total), nuclear power (16 percent),
natural gas (22 percent) and wind (8 percent). The remainder
of PNM's power comes from power purchases.
Along with providing energy to New Mexico, power plants have
positive economic impacts in the state. Power plants provide
high-paying jobs, pay significant property taxes in their
communities and support local communities through the purchase
of materials and supplies. In addition, royalties from gas
and coal have a positive impact on the state.
While generating electricity, PNM is mindful of real and
potential impacts on the environment and has been a leader
in environmental efforts as a utility and power provider.
PNM's plants meet all state and federal permitting requirements
and meet or exceed all state and federal environmental regulations.
All PNM plants are managed under an Environmental Management
System and have achieved ISO 14001 certification for environmental
performance.
