Out With the Old – PNM Now Offers $50 for Your Old Fridge

Albuquerque: Now is a great time to get rid of an old, energy-guzzling refrigerator or freezer – PNM will now pay you $50 for your old unit. PNM will also have it picked up for free and disposed of properly.

“We’re raising our refrigerator rebate to make it more cost-effective for you to dispose of a second fridge that might be sitting under-used in your garage or if you’ve been thinking about upgrading your kitchen fridge,” said Emma van Moorsel, PNM senior energy efficiency program developer.

According to van Moorsel, there are good reasons to consider recycling an old unit:

  • A 25-year-old refrigerator can use up to three times as much electricity as a new one
  • Remove an older, second refrigerator manufactured in the 80s that uses 1700 kilowatt hours a year, don't replace it and save up to $190 annually on your electricity bill. Use the ENERGY STAR calculator to estimate how much electricity your fridge is using: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=refrig.calculator
  • PNM will mail you a check for $50 (up from $30)

To qualify, the unit must be in working condition and be 10 to 27 cubic feet in size. (Dorm-sized refrigerators do not qualify.) All makes and models are accepted. Both business and residential customers can participate.

Refrigerators will be processed at a refrigerating recycling center in Albuquerque where all re-usable materials are completely recycled and toxins properly handled.

To schedule a pick-up, call 877-643-1956 or visit PNM.com/fridge.

PNM energy efficiency programs help customers save money and avoid the cost of new generation.
