PNM Hosts Free Energy Fair on Wed. Aug. 26 at the Bessie-Forward Global Resources Center
Silver City, NM: Sign up for help with food and utility bills, discuss PNM payment plans, enjoy snacks and receive great giveaways while supplies last at the free Energy Fair on Wednesday, August 26, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bessie-Forward Global Resource Center, located at 12th and Kentucky Streets on the Western New Mexico University Campus in Silver City.
Participants can pick up a free money-saving compact fluorescent light bulb to try at home while supplies last, a $25 IGA grocery card (for the first 200 households to sign up for a payment plan or LIHEAP) and get tips on lowering home energy bills. Bring your PNM bills and talk with a PNM representative about payment plans and Budget Billing.
PNM will be joined by the New Mexico Human Services Department, Interfaith Power and Light, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, Silver City Food Coop and The Volunteer Center of Grant County.
The fair provides an opportunity to apply for several assistance programs in one convenient location, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help with utility bills, free home weatherization, Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP, formerly the food stamp program).
LIHEAP funds are still available for eligible households that have not received them this year. Increased federal funding means more people will be able to receive free home weatherization and reduce energy bills for years to come.
Assistance programs are based on household income. To sign up for LIHEAP, bring:
- Proof of household income;
- An ID for the person filling out the application;
- A social security number for all household members;
- One of the following from the last 12 months:
- Your highest gas or electric bill for 30 days of service;
- An account history printout from a propane company or receipts for two propane fills with the fewest days in between;
- A receipt for a wood purchase, or,
- A disconnect notice, if you have received one, or the cost of starting utility service at your home.
Admission is free. For information call PNM at 1-888-DIAL PNM (1-888-342-5766).
