One Soldier’s Sacrifice Inspires Memorial to All Veterans

Waterflow: Representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 614, government officials, PNM employees, family members and friends came together at the San Juan Generating Station in Waterflow, New Mexico two days before the Fourth of July to unveil a memorial to all veterans inspired by one soldier’s sacrifice.

“Generations of Four Corners men and women have stepped forward to serve their country. This memorial will stand as a symbol of that rich legacy of service,“ said John M. Garcia, Secretary, New Mexico Department of Veterans Services.

PNM employee Marshall Alan Westbrook was killed in 2005 while serving with the National Guard in Iraq. Determined not to let this sacrifice be forgotten, friends and coworkers worked with plant leadership, local contractors and state and county officials to create the memorial that now stands at the entrance of plant’s administrative offices.

PNM and its employees offered the site, contracted with a local company to lay the concrete for the foundation, purchased the granite and built the stainless steel portion of the foundation. Together with San Juan County officials, PNM employees sought help from the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, which provided a grant of $4,900. The grant is one of ten given to allow communities throughout New Mexico to help them honor residents who served their country.

“We can never do enough to remind ourselves of those who have served to defend this great nation. We are honored to have worked with PNM and the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services in making this memorial a reality for all to see,” said Tony Atkinson, Chairman of the San Juan County Commission.

Members of Westbrook’s family, including a son who now works at the plant, were on hand to plant flowers in front of the memorial. Veterans, their families, and groups who wish to honor veterans can make arrangements to view the memorial by contacting Lisa Martin, PNM community liaison, at (505) 598-7876.
