PNM Can Help Low Income Gas Customers With Winter Utility Bills
Albuquerque: PNM says weatherization assistance and protection
from utility disconnect is available to help low-income customers with their
winter heating bills.
Weatherization
Income-qualified households may be eligible to receive no-cost weatherization
assistance that could substantially reduce energy bills through the Weatherization
Assistance Program, a program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the
State of New Mexico and PNM. The program includes an energy audit and weatherization
measures that typically include weather-stripping, caulking and furnace tune-up
or repair. For information, residents of central New Mexico should contact
the Central New Mexico Housing Corporation, (505) 345-4949; in northern New
Mexico contact Los Amigos Educational Resource Center, (505) 983-7743; in eastern
New Mexico contact the Eastern Plains Council of Governments, (505) 762-4505;
and in southern New Mexico contact Community Action Agency of Southern New
Mexico, (505) 523-1639.
Protection from utility disconnect
By state law, income-qualified households may be protected from having their
utilities disconnected between November 15 and March 15 provided they take
certain steps. The New Mexico Department of Human Services (HSD) determines
who qualifies for protection based on income, and the number of people and
ages of those living in the home. Household income must be at or below 150
percent of the federal poverty level. For customers seeking this help, PNM
will provide bill information to HSD, delay any disconnection for 15 days while
eligibility is determined. PNM may ask the customer to enter into a minimal
payment arrangement for any outstanding balance on the bill, which can help
prevent bills from accumulating through the winter. For information, contact
PNM at 1-888-DIAL PNM.
