PNM Plans Early Morning Outage on
Tuesday, June 5 for Repairs to Substation
Clayton: PNM officials say that electric service to 1,600 Clayton homes and businesses will be off from approximately 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5 to allow for critical maintenance at the local electric substation.
“Because we know how inconvenient a power outage can be, we have deliberately scheduled our work for the early morning hours, a time when demand for electricity is typically lower,” said Randy Fitzpatrick, a PNM manager.
Fitzpatrick said the necessary work was impossible to make safely without turning off the power briefly. He said there was a small chance that the repairs could take more than the planned hour to complete but stressed that the goal was to keep the duration of the outage to a minimum.
Tips for Preparing for a Power Outage from the American Red Cross
- If you use a home oxygen system, be sure to have a spare portable system on hand. If you use a battery-operated wheelchair, life-support system, or other power-dependent equipment, have a back-up battery and check with your healthcare provider in advance to discuss what steps you need to take.
- Make sure you have a flashlight with back-up batteries on hand. Do not use candles for lighting; left unattended they can be a fire hazard.
- If you have space in your refrigerator or freezer, consider filling plastic containers with water, leaving about an inch of space inside each one, and placing them in the refrigerator and freezer to keep food cold.
- If you use medication that requires refrigeration, most can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.
- Computers
- Turn off computers, monitors, printers, copiers, scanners and other devices so that when the power goes down they will already have been safely shut down.
- Back up computer files and operating systems regularly.
- Buy extra batteries and a power converter if you use a laptop computer.
- Get a high quality surge protector or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for all of your computer equipment to help protect against fluctuations in the power supply and unplanned outages.
