PNM Strengthens Corrales, Rio Rancho Electric Service

Albuquerque: PNM is laying the groundwork for a new transmission project that would improve the reliability of service to 26,500 homes and businesses in the southeastern portion of the City of Rio Rancho and in the Village of Corrales.

“Power outages are inconvenient and costly,” said Joel Ivy, PNM Vice President for Technical Services. “This project will help us improve the reliability of service to these growing communities.”

Today, residents of Corrales and parts of Rio Rancho depend on a single transmission line to carry power to the area. The proposed construction project would separate this source into two transmission lines, allowing the majority of residents to have a second independent source of power that can serve them. This will help minimize outages that could affect customers by improving PNM’s ability to restore service faster.

The proposed project involves building approximately 1.5 miles of overhead transmission lines that start at the corner of Route 528 and Southern Boulevard, go east on Meadowlark Lane, turn south on Stephanie Road and follow Stephanie Road to Sara Road, where the line will travel through an easement to the existing electrical switching station behind Intel.

The second portion of line would start at the Panorama Substation behind the Rio Rancho City Hall, go south on Grande Boulevard to Peggy Road, and across Route 528 to connect with (tap sounds like jargon) the existing transmission line along Route 528.

PNM will move the large transmission structure out of the intersection of Route 528, Southern Boulevard and Meadowlark Lane and also remove several spans of transmission conductor that now run along Southern Blvd. and Route 528.

Construction could begin at the end of 2007 or early in 2008 and take approximately three months to complete. During construction, local electric service would not be interrupted but construction would have some temporary impact on traffic along portions of the route.

PNM will be working with community leaders and property owners. Those with questions or concerns can contact Laurie Moye, PNM System Engineering, at 241-2792.
