Photovoltaics 101 Versus Traditional Power Sources

Albuquerque: PNM invites the public to learn about solar power plus the basics of traditional energy generation through a tour of a power plant and a new 25-kilowatt solar generating facility at Algodones, New Mexico, on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This PNM introduction to solar power and energy production can serve as starting point for more in-depth exploration of the paths toward a sustainable energy future.

The tour includes a look at a retired natural gas-fired power plant that served New Mexico into the 1980’s to learn how electricity is produced today. Participants will then take a walk out to the sunflower solar array located on the same grounds to learn about solar photovoltaic programs available today and PNM’s commitment to renewable energy.

Please sign-up in advance by calling Sharon Rogers at (505) 241-2763. Muddy conditions or extreme weather may require rescheduling the tour. This is a rugged, no-frills location so wear warm clothes and sturdy, closed-toed shoes, and bring water for drinking. The plant is located just west of Interstate 25 at the Algodones exit.

Schools and other organizations can schedule a tour for groups of 10 or more by calling PNM at 241-2763.
