PNM Rewards Innovation in the Classroom

Albuquerque: For the 18th consecutive year, PNM seeks to inspire and reward innovation in the classroom through its Classroom Innovation Grant program, which is designed to help teachers tackle educational challenges one classroom at a time. Teachers have until March 5, 2007, to apply.

More than $200,000 in grants from the PNM Fund will be available this year to help educators bring innovative teaching ideas to life. Grants ranging from $500 to $3,000 are given for any subject including science, history, math, arts, and language. To date, the PNM Fund has distributed $1.3 million in grants to New Mexico teachers.

Full-time teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, in New Mexico public and private schools, and pre-kindergarten teachers with an early childhood license, are eligible to apply. The original Feb. 5 application deadline has been extended. Applications must be submitted online at PNM.com/innovation by 5 p.m. on March 5 to be considered. Applications should include a project description, teaching objectives, a budget and an evaluation method.

“Good teachers know how to give their students memorable learning experiences. PNM can support them with resources,” said Diane Harrison Ogawa, executive director of the PNM Resources Foundation, a separate nonprofit originally endowed by a gift from earnings by PNM Resources shareholders to improve the quality of life for New Mexicans. The PNM Fund is a division of the PNM Resources Foundation.

PNM also publishes a free electronic newsletter for teachers, which is loaded with teaching ideas based on Classroom Innovation Grant-winning projects, plus tips on how to write a successful grant application. Visit PNM.com/innovation to sign up for the newsletter, to apply for a grant or to see a list of previous grant winners.
