Albuquerque: The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, known as MALDEF, presented its 2006 Corporate Responsibility Service Award to Patrick Ortiz, PNM Resources senior vice president and general counsel, at its 22nd Annual San Antonio Gala in September. MALDEF, the nation’s leading Latino legal organization, promotes and protects the rights of Latinos through advocacy, litigation, community education and outreach, leadership development, and higher education scholarships. MALDEF honored Ortiz because of his distinguished career in law and community service. Ortiz, a Santa Fe native, is a graduate of St. Michael’s High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Santa Fe. He received his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Ortiz is responsible for legal services, corporate governance matters, ethics and compliance and internal audit services for PNM Resources, the energy holding company based in Albuquerque. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources. Previously he served as chief counsel in New Mexico for US WEST Communications. He has served as a commissioner on the New Mexico Public Service Commission and as its chief counsel, and was the general counsel to the New Mexico State Corporation Commission. Active in the community, Ortiz is currently vice president of the board of trustees of the nonprofit PNM Resources Foundation, a member of the board of trustees of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe Catholic Foundation and a member of the board of visitors of the College of Santa Fe. He has previously served on the boards of a number of other nonprofits including the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation, MALDEF, and served as president of the boards of Santa Fe Partners in Education and United Way of Santa Fe County. Ortiz has been active in organizations serving the needs of the physically and mentally challenged, including Challenge New Mexico where he and his wife established an endowment for its therapeutic horseback riding program and were instrumental in the establishment of an indoor riding arena.
