News ReleaseMay 2, 2006 Farmington Resident Receives PNM Volunteer Excellence Award
Albuquerque: Farmington resident Diana Luck was one of three PNM employees and retirees chosen to receive the 2006 PNM Volunteer Excellence Award. “Volunteers give something priceless, they give of themselves,” said Diane Harrison Ogawa, director of PNM Community Relations and executive director of the PNM Resources Foundation. “Our employees and retirees are the heart of our community engagement program. They touch the lives of so many. It’s an honor to support their work.” Luck manages PNM’s natural gas operations office in northwestern New Mexico. She and her fellow PNM employees have provided meals for hundreds of hospice patients and their families through the Northwest New Mexico Hospice. They were among the original “Baking Betties” at the hospice and have been have been dubbed the “PNM Bakers.” Luck learned about the hospice through the families of friends who needed end-of-life care. She decided volunteering would be a perfect way to combine her passion for cooking with her desire to help others. She started by providing only baked goods but soon decided she could do more. Luck arrives at the hospice every Monday morning with her surprise of the week, which can range from a hearty soup with homemade bread to a complete meal with meat loaf, mashed potatoes, veggies and cookies. She donates all the food she bakes. Sharon Lane, volunteer coordinator for the hospice, noted that it is the caring and enthusiasm that Luck puts into every recipe that makes her contribution so special. As proof, Lane said that patients and their families rave about Luck’s cooking on a regular basis. “Diana Luck is the perfect example of the volunteer spirit. She shares her cooking talents with our patients and their families, but most of all she shares herself, a perfect combination in our book,” said Lane. The PNM Resources Foundation made a $1,000 donation to the hospice in Luck’s name. Luck was selected from 92 employees and retirees nominated by nonprofit organizations statewide. PNM Resources Foundation donated an additional $100 to the 89 other organizations that submitted nominations. Once a year, nonprofit organizations are invited to nominate PNM employees and retirees for the PNM Volunteer Excellence Awards, an initiative designed to encourage volunteerism and to give employees the chance to increase their support for community programs and services. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company based in Albuquerque, N.M. PNM provides electric utility service to 424,000 customers and natural gas service to 478,000 customers in New Mexico. The company also sells power on the wholesale market in the West.
