PNM has chosen Stephen Baca of El Rancho and Isidore Saiz of Santa Fe to receive the 2006 PNM Volunteer Excellence Awards.

“Volunteers give something priceless, they give of themselves,” said Diane Harrison Ogawa, director of PNM Community Relations and executive director of the PNM Resources Foundation. “Our employees and retirees are the heart of our community engagement program. They touch the lives of so many in New Mexico. It’s an honor to support the important work they do.”

The PNM Resources Foundation made a $1,000 donation in each winner’s name to the organization for which they volunteer. Donations will go to the Pojoaque Fire Department in Baca’s name and to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Saiz’s name.

When it comes time to say a last goodbye, families across the state can count on Saiz, a PNM retiree, to see that loved ones are honored properly. Saiz has logged more than 10,000 miles and as many hours during 20 years as a member of the VFW Post 2951 Honor Guard, which serves at the funerals of veterans. Saiz responds whenever he is needed, sometimes for two or three funerals a day and as many as 150 or more each year. The intricate ceremony includes buglers, prayers and a rifle salute. Saiz performs the prayer. It is the gratitude of families that keeps Saiz active in the program.

By day, Baca is a member of one of the PNM natural gas line crews working in the Santa Fe area. By night and on weekends, he is a volunteer member of the Pojoaque Fire Department. Fellow firefighters recognized Baca for his devotion and leadership by electing him fire lieutenant. On weeknights, he helps with training and works around the station. On weekends, he is on call to respond to fires.

“I love being a firefighter. I love the excitement and I love helping people in my community,” said Baca.

A third PNM employee, Diana Luck of Farmington, also received the 2006 PNM Volunteer Excellence Award for her work with the Northwestern New Mexico Hospice. The three winners were selected from 92 employees and retirees nominated by nonprofit organizations statewide. The PNM Resources Foundation donated an additional $100 to the 89 other organizations who submitted nominations.

Once a year, nonprofit organizations are invited to nominate PNM employees and retirees for the awards program, an initiative designed to encourage volunteerism and give employees the chance to increase their support for important community programs and services.
