Albuquerque: PNM is giving away home weatherization kits at its customer service centers around New Mexico in an effort to help customers manage record-setting natural gas costs this winter.

Weatherization kits are now available in limited quantities at most, but not all, PNM customer service centers. The kits have been delayed due to assembly and shipping problems experienced by the supplier, but they are arriving in increments and will continue to trickle in throughout the rest of November.

Before visiting a customer service center to claim a kit, PNM recommends customers first check the availability of kits at that center. They may do so by visiting PNM.com, where PNM will update kit availability by location twice daily. The kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. In order to help as many customers as possible, PNM is limiting distribution to one kit per residential customer.

Each kit contains:

  • 30 feet of rope caulk
  • Light switch and outlet insulators
  • 17 feet of adhesive weather-stripping
  • Outlet plugs
  • Low-flow showerhead
  • Window film for up to five windows

“It is extremely important for all of us to make our homes as efficient as possible this winter,” said Cindy McGill, PNM vice president of customer and market services. “As consumers, we can’t control the cost of natural gas, but we can take steps to control how much of it we use by weatherizing and changing some of our habits.”

PNM expects that the average residential customer’s monthly natural gas bill will cost 60 percent more this winter than last winter due to the increased cost of natural gas, which by law PNM passes through to customers without profit. Lower consumption this winter will help customers manage the increased expense.

PNM urges customers who use the kit to consider it a first step to weatherizing for the season, and plan on taking additional weatherization measures such as installing a programmable thermostat and ensuring their homes are well insulated. For additional weatherization tips, customers may request a free instructional DVD by calling 246-5700 or (800) 687-7854 or visiting PNM.com/toolkit.
