Combined PNM and TNMP Fundraiser for Katrina Relief Surpasses $500,000
Albuquerque: More than 2,000 customers and employees wrote checks to
the American Red Cross, raising more than $500,000 with a company match from
PNM Resources, the parent company of PNM and Texas-New Mexico Power Co. (TNMP).
"The generosity of our customers and employees is astonishing," said
Lisa Rister, PNM executive director of investor relations and a board member
of the American Red Cross Middle Rio Grande Chapter. "This does so much;
it buys medicine, food, water, shelter and dry clothes. It helps support volunteers
on the ground so they can provide much needed assistance to the hurricane victims."
PNM and TNMP pledged to match as much as $75,000 in customer and employee
contributions on Aug. 31, days after Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. In less
than a week, donations exceeded the match, prompting PNM Resources to raise
the company match to $100,000. In the end, more than $500,000 was donated to
the Red Cross through the effort.
"We're very proud of the community partnership that‘s been shown
with our customers in such a worthy cause, and the American Red Cross is profoundly
thankful to those who contributed," Rister said.
Meanwhile, line crews from PNM are still in the hurricane-ravaged region working
to repair damaged power lines. They have been working 17-hour days, seven days
a week, for the last three weeks. A line crew from TNMP returned home from
Sept. 14 from Mississippi, where they had been helping to restore power since
Aug. 31.
