PNM Recommends Professional Help To Increase
Furnace Safety and Efficiency
Albuquerque: On this first day of autumn, PNM has
a recommendation for customers who want to stay warm and safe
at home this season: hire a trained professional to inspect
your natural gas-fired furnace and prepare it for the cold
nights to come.
According to PNM, a certified plumber or heating specialist
is the best person to re-light a furnace, test it for dangerous
carbon monoxide (CO) levels, and check for any other potential
problems. A professionally serviced furnace is likely to be
safer as well as more efficient than one serviced by the owner
or not serviced at all.
The PNM Referral Service can help customers find reputable
plumbers and electricians who can sell, service and install
appliances for homes and business. The service includes dozens
of New Mexico businesses that have provided proof of licensing,
insurance and references. For a referral, call (505) 241-4674
or (888) 674-9473 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Tips for furnace safety and maintenance
- Furnace filters should be checked monthly. Filters reduce
the amount of dust and dirt in the home. Clogged or dirty
filters reduce the amount of airflow over the heat exchanger.
Filters should be checked regularly and either cleaned or
replaced when dirty.
- Furnace blower doors and access panels should be replaced
so they fit securely. This prevents harmful carbon monoxide
(CO) from escaping into the home.
- The area near the furnace should be clear from combustible
materials. This includes paints, solvents or other flammable
substances.
- The furnace should be properly ventilated. This also helps
prevent CO from backing up into the home.
- The distribution system should be checked for leaks and
repaired with duct tape. Ducts should be insulated in unheated
areas, such as basements and crawl spaces.
- Fan and motor bearings should be lubricated as indicated
by posted instructions. Routine maintenance will help furnaces
run better and last longer.
