Albuquerque: Leaders from area nonprofits are invited to attend a seminar on social entrepreneurship, an approach that is leading many nonprofits across the country to better meld the passion of their social mission with a business-like approach to the marketplace.

The seminar, "Merging Mission, Market and Money: An Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship for Nonprofit Organizations" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Road, NW. The workshop will be repeated later that day from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Area foundations and corporations are sponsoring the seminar. It will describe the basic principles and raw materials of social entrepreneurship, discuss the risks and rewards inherent in nonprofits becoming more entrepreneurial and share some of the tools being used by successful social entrepreneurs across the country. An overview of a project that will guide a selected group of area nonprofits through a six-month process to help them become more entrepreneurial also will be discussed.

The National Center for Social Entrepreneurs will present the seminar. Since its founding in 1985, the center has assisted hundreds of nonprofits across the country in finding a more effective balance between doing good (mission), meeting needs (market) and paying for it (money).

"The seminar will help nonprofits evaluate their management skills, better understand their marketplace and expand their most effective services in an effort to become less reliant on 'granted' revenue," said Diane Harrison Ogawa, director of community relations at PNM, one of 11 corporate and foundation seminar sponsors.

Executive directors, managers and board of directors' members of nonprofits are invited to attend. Each nonprofit may send a team of as many as three individuals. There is no charge for the event, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Contact PNM at (505) 241-2209 to register.
