News ReleaseSept. 30, 2003 PNM Employees Teach Students Fire Safety
Waterflow: Employees from the PNM San Juan Generating Station (SJGS) and the City of Farmington Fire Department, along with other organizations representing the areas of life safety and environment, will present several fire education programs this week at the Farmington Civic Center. The performances will cover fire safety points such as: Stop, Drop and Roll; check your smoke detector twice a year; have a home escape plan; and use 911 only for emergencies. "The goal of our fire education program is to provide fun lessons on fire safety to young children, who have some of the greatest potential exposures to fire danger," said Randy Oltmanns, coordinator of SJGS's Emergency Response Team (ERT). "We perform fun skits with characters the children know from recent movies." This year, team members have chosen to use "Monsters Inc." as its theme, he said. The team will use monster-sized props, including matches, a red phone to call 911 and a smoke alarm to show fire safety in a memorable way to students in preschool through third grade and special education classes. SJGS's ERT members, in conjunction with the City of Farmington Fire Department, have been conducting fire education programs for San Juan County children for more than 15 years. The SJGS ERT is a volunteer fire department. ERT members
perform a variety of jobs at the power plant. Members are
trained as industrial structural firefighters and provide
first response to fire and emergency medical events at the
power plant. PNM is the principal subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company based in Albuquerque. PNM provides electric utility service to 387,000 customers and natural gas service to 450,000 customers in New Mexico. The company also sells power on the wholesale market in the Western U.S. PNM Resources stock is traded primarily on the NYSE under the symbol PNM. SJGS is a 1,798-megawatt coal-fired power plant located 15 miles northwest of Farmington, N.M. The plant is PNM's primary generation source, providing 60 percent of the power needed by PNM customers. PNM operates the plant on behalf of the company and eight other owners.
