Waterflow: Four subcontractors were injured this morning at the PNM San Juan Generating Station (SJGS) while preparing to work on one of the plant's unit boilers.

The individuals, who work for Riley Industrial, suffered burns from boiler steam at approximately 8:20 a.m. while preparing to remove a clinker, a solid piece of ash within the plant's Unit 4 boiler. Plant medical personnel immediately worked to stabilize the individuals until emergency vehicles arrived to quickly transport them to the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.

SJGS safety officials are working diligently to further determine the cause of the accident. At this time, all four units at the plant are continuing to operate.

"Because we take safety very seriously at all of our power plants, we are very concerned about this incident," said Pat Goodman, vice president of power production at PNM. "Clearly our thoughts are with these individuals and their families at this time."

The plant has worked to increase safety awareness during the last few years by instituting safety activities in the workplace and offering behavioral-based incentives to keep employees focused on safety issues. Safety personnel will thoroughly review the results of this accident investigation to continue enhancing safety measures taken in the future.

PNM is the principal subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company based in Albuquerque. SJGS is a 1,798-megawatt coal-fired power plant located 15 miles northwest of Farmington, N.M. The plant is PNM's primary generation source, providing 60 percent of the power needed by PNM customers. PNM operates the plant on behalf of the company and eight other owners.
