Albuquerque: The Project Management Institute (PMI) recently recognized PNM with its first "Community Advancement Through Project Management Award" for the utility's success planning and completing a Habitat for Humanity House in Albuquerque.

PMI announced PNM was the recipient of this international award at the PMI Global Congress 2003-Europe in The Hague, Netherlands. PNM was recognized for its outstanding performance in the practice of project management for a significant achievement that improves the well-being of a community by completing a project to the pro bono delivery of goods and services.

"PNM's use of project management skills and tools is proof that project management can be used by an organization to improve the quality of life for people all over the world," said Gregory Balestrero, CEO of the Project Management Institute. "PNM's commitment to improving its community is an accomplishment that we are proud to recognize with this award."

PNM was honored for its companywide commitment to the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity to help a family in need of low-cost housing. The company contributed $40,000, organized about 300 volunteers and offered extensive utility-related expertise on energy efficiency, landscaping, home maintenance and home ownership. The company used project management principles such as scope, time management, communication management and human resources management.

"Our employees don't work or volunteer for recognition, but it's great when they are honored internationally for the work they do in our communities everyday," said Bill Real, PNM's senior vice president for public policy.

Project Management Institute (PMI), with more than 105,000 members in 135 countries, is the world's foremost authority for the project management profession. PMI sets industry standards, conducts research and provides education, certification and professional exchange opportunities, designed to strengthen and further establish the profession.
