Furnace Re-Lighting Safety Tips
Albuquerque: With nights getting chillier, there's
no mistaking that fall is in the air. Residents are reminded
that now is the time to get their furnaces ready for winter.
PNM recommends finding a knowledgeable, trained professional
to perform this service. PNM will offer season light and safety
checks for a fee on a limited basis in the Albuquerque metro
area.
Residents who want to perform this service themselves, should
keep in mind these important safety tips:
- Furnace filters should be checked monthly. Filters reduce
the amount of dust and dirt in the home. Clogged or dirty
filters reduce the amount of air flow over the heat exchanger.
Filters should be checked regularly, and either cleaned
or replaced when dirty.
- Furnace blower doors and access panels should be replaced
so they fit securely. This prevents harmful carbon monoxide
from escaping into the home.
- The area near the furnace should be clear from combustible
materials. This includes paints, solvents, or other flammable
substances.
- The furnace should be properly ventilated. This also helps
prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into the home.
- The distribution system should be checked for leaks and
repaired with duct tape. Ducts should be insulated in unheated
areas, such as basements and crawlspaces.
- Fan and motor bearings should be lubricated as indicated
by posted instructions. Routine maintenance will help furnaces
to run better and last longer.
