Focusing on Long-Term Repercussions of
Attacks,
PNM Will Support Fund Assisting Children of Victims
Albuquerque: PNM, Public Service Co. of New Mexico,
today committed to donating $100,000 to assist children of
victims of recent terrorist attacks with future educational
expenses.
In addition, the non-profit PNM Foundation will encourage
donations from the company's 2,660 employees and thousands
of retirees by matching individual donations of up to $1,000.
The company also said it will match donations from customers
throughout New Mexico, for a combined matching effort of $75,000.
The total PNM and PNM Foundation effort could raise $250,000
or more for The Power of America Fund, a national effort involving
a number of energy companies and their employees.
"Acting together, PNM and other energy companies hope
to raise at least $10 million from shareholders, employees
and customers," said PNM Chairman, President and CEO
Jeff Sterba. Funds generated by the endowment will be used
exclusively for college scholarships in the coming years to
the children of the recent attack victims.
The fund will be administered by Educational Testing Services
of Princeton, N.J., which administers several other corporate
scholarship funds.
"Though our state is far from New York, New Mexicans
are touched by this tragedy in so many ways," Sterba
said. "We believe The Power of America Fund is one way
to partner with our employees and customers and begin to focus
on the long-term implications of the recent attacks, even
while the critical immediate relief continues."
Sterba said the donation is consistent with PNM's broader
support of education initiatives here in New Mexico. PNM and
the PNM Foundation give upwards of $2 million a year to non-profit
community organizations in New Mexico, and education is a
key focus of the company's annual commitment.
Customers wanting to donate to the fund should make checks
payable to "The Power of America Fund" and include
them in the return envelope when they remit their regular
monthly payment to PNM. The company will accept the checks
through the end of the year, determine the total match, and
forward all money to the fund. Contributions are tax deductible.
Customers may also send checks, payable to the fund, to:
The Power of America Fund, c/o PNM, Alvarado Square MS 1110,
Albuquerque, N.M., 87158. More information on this effort
is available by calling (505) 241-0837 or by sending an e-mail
to powerofamericafund@pnm.com.
The PNM Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization,

the Foundation will now match employee or company retiree
donations to The Power of America Fund, of up to $1,000, up
to the $75,000 matching target.
