Albuquerque: Twenty-four New Mexico students, eight from Albuquerque local high schools, will have the opportunity to attend college or vocational school this fall with scholarships sponsored by PNM's LLAVE organization.

LLAVE awarded scholarships in amounts ranging from $300 to $1,200 to students throughout New Mexico.

LLAVE, PNM's non-profit Hispanic employee group, raised most of the scholarship money from its annual Cinco de Mayo golf tournament and through PNM corporate contributions. LLAVE focuses on issues including leadership development , cultural appreciation, improving business operations, and other issues.

The organization, whose goal is to increase cultural awareness within the company, awarded scholarships on the basis of leadership, community involvement and academics.

"LLAVE is an organization dedicated to education," said PNM's Maria Guzman, LLAVE president. "The scholarship program is one way to help students succeed. We want to do our part to help fill the pipeline with talented minority students, because post-secondary education is so important to career success and quality of life."

The LLAVE scholarship program, started in 1992, has awarded $44,550 in scholarships since it's inception.
