Water Management
Conserving water has become a clear priority for New Mexico.
For a long time, PNM has recognized what a precious resource
water is for our industry and the future growth and success
of the state. As part of our personal commitment to New Mexico,
PNM has been actively pursuing options to reduce its water
use while meeting the state's increased demand for electricity.
How does the production of electricity affect New Mexico's
water supply? Overall, power plants use a small percentage
of New Mexico's total water supply, about 2 percent.
Though PNM's plants consume 1.4 percent (approximately 24,000
acre-feet) of this total, the company realizes that its facilities
have an effect on regional water supplies. Because of this,
PNM has implemented water-conservation strategies at its facilities
and continues to explore many different options for reducing
the company's water use, including using water efficiently,
participating in initiatives that explore water conservation
alternatives and meeting customer energy needs with minimal
water impact.
