If you see a fallen or downed power line:

  • Always assume electricity is running through it, even if there aren't any sparks or there's a power outage in the area.
  • Do not touch the line. Call PNM immediately: (888) 342-5766 or (888) DIAL-PNM.
  • Do not go near it or anything that is touching it, such as a tree branch, fence or vehicle. Gloves won't protect you - even rubber ones.
  • Do not walk or drive under a fallen or sagging power line.
  • If a power line comes down in water or a puddle, avoid the body of water entirely. Electricity travels easily through water.
  • If you're in a car and it's near or touching a power line, don't get out. You're safer inside. Don't touch any metal inside the car. Leave the vehicle only if your life is in danger.
