National Expert to Speak on Electricity
Options for the Future

Albuquerque: A national expert from the Electric Power Research Institute will present and lead a discussion next Tuesday on energy options for the future. The public is invited to attend.

Dr. Bryan Hannegan, vice president of environment at EPRI, will speak about the future of conventional generation, including coal-, natural gas- and nuclear-fueled power plants, as well as the promise of renewable energy, energy efficiency and demand-side management. Hannegan will address the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies, including cost, reliability, environmental impact and other factors.

Hannegan’s presentation and discussion will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at PNM’s Alvarado Square complex in downtown Albuquerque. Alvarado Square is located on the north side of Silver Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets S.W. To reserve a spot at the presentation, please call Don Brown at 241-2849 .

Expert Talk Part of Larger Public Input Process

Hannegan’s visit to New Mexico is part of a larger effort by PNM to gather public input as it prepares a blueprint for how it will meet New Mexico’s energy needs for the next 20 years. To prepare that plan, which will consider generation options as well as efforts to reduce electric use through energy efficiency and demand-side management, PNM will hold a series of public advisory meetings during the next 10 months. The resulting document, known as an Integrated Resource Plan, will be filed with the N.M. Public Regulation Commission early next summer.

“The decisions we make about how to meet New Mexico’s energy needs for the next 20 years will affect customers in very significant ways, from the bills we pay every month to the our impact on the environment,” said Pat Vincent, utilities president for PNM’s parent company, PNM Resources. “Having the public involved in this decision-making process is critical to building an energy portfolio that addresses the needs of New Mexico and that New Mexicans can actively support.”

The public advisory meetings are open to the public. To learn more about the IRP process, or to be added to the standing invitation list, visit www.pnm.com/irp.
