News ReleaseFeb. 5, 2002 PNM Donates Firefighter Gear to City of Lordsburg
Albuquerque: On Tuesday, Feb. 5, PNM delivered used firefighters' gear to the Lordsburg Fire Department. The donation included: coats and pants, helmets, boots, and self-contained breathing apparatus. Fire hose for an engine was also part of the donation. The equipment comes from PNM's San Juan Generating Station, the company's large coal-fired generating station located near Farmington, New Mexico. The station there, located some 15 miles from town, has its own fire department including a fire truck and ambulance. It is staffed by trained volunteer firefighters, all power plant employees. They act as the first responders in the case of an emergency. The donated gear for Lordsburg is surplus from San Juan Generating Station. "Firefighting gear is expensive," says Pat Goodman, PNM vice president in charge of all PNM power plants running or under construction. He helped drive the gear from Albuquerque to Lordsburg this week. "One new suit of coat, pants, helmet and boots can run new between $1,200 to $1,500 each." New self-contained breathing apparatus is $3,300 each. "We really want to support the fire department as part of the safety for all the workers at the new Lordsburg Generating Station," Goodman said. The donation includes ten pant and coat sets of various sizes, six helmets and 16 pairs of boots in sizes ranging from size 5 to size 13. Nine self-contained breathing apparatus units were also part of the donation. Spare parts for the breathing apparatus are also included.
