PNM Solar Direct Program

The PNM Solar Direct Program is a first-of-its-kind, innovative opportunity in New Mexico for large electric customers, such as governmental entities, municipalities, and large commercial businesses with an aggregate load of 2.5 megawatt (MW) or greater, to achieve their clean energy / carbon footprint reduction goals.

PNM Solar Direct will help governmental and large commercial customers achieve their clean energy/sustainability goals by receiving solar-generated electricity. In addition, the fixed price of electricity over the term of the subscription will protect these customers from fluctuating energy costs.  Customers will also receive a credit on their bills based on their subscription levels.

PNM is committed to working with our customers to find solutions to their energy needs, as we did recently for a large data center. Several large customers, including the City of Albuquerque have established goals for using clean energy and/or reducing their carbon footprint. PNM has been working closely with the City of Albuquerque and larger customers to create a program to help them achieve their goals in a cost-effective way.   By subscribing to PNM Solar Direct, these customers will be able to meet their energy needs with electricity generated by a large-scale solar facility. For PNM, this new program is also consistent with the company’s ongoing transition to cleaner, sustainable energy resources. It’s good for the City of Albuquerque and other customers, good for PNM, and good for New Mexico.

If approved by the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission, any governmental customer such as the City of Albuquerque may be able to subscribe to the PNM Solar Direct program to receive electricity at a set price from a new solar facility that will be built for this purpose. The customer must commit to take the requested amount of electricity for a specific length of time.

PNM is currently requesting proposals for construction of a 50 MW solar facility. This site will produce enough clean energy to power approximately 16,000 average homes for a year. The solar facility will be located within PNM’s service area. Exact location will depend on the results of the RFP. The cost of the PNM Solar Direct program will depend on the results of the RFP process. The cost to individual customers, in addition to the cost of the solar facility, will also depend on the amount of electricity to which each customer is subscribing.
